Forgive Them

If Jesus can forgive the people who crucified him as it was happening, I can forgive the people in my life who have wronged me. I can forgive them regardless of how strongly I feel hurt. I can forgive them regardless of how long the pain lasts.
I've experienced everything from deep betrayal to the minor thoughtlessness of another. But the reminder to forgive lives strong in my heart. Harboring resentment and seeking revenge will tear me down before anyone else. It won't help me to feel better and it won't heal a relationship.
Jesus didn't forgive them to make them angry at him. He didn't forgive them out of bitterness. He didn't forgive them because they wanted or asked for it. He forgave them to set them free from what they had done. To separate the person from the action.
When we forgive, it sets us free. It's not to get a reaction or response from the forgiven. You can even forgive someone you'll never see again or who would never accept that they need forgiveness from you.
Forgiveness is a gift.
I can forgive them.
I will FORGIVE THEM.

Father, I forgive those who have wronged me in my life and I ask that you forgive them, too. I forgive those who would never acknowledge that they mistreated me in any way. I forgive those who do not seek relational repair. I forgive those who wrong me day after day. I do not hold resentment against those who do not know what they do. I am reminded that we face a deceptive enemy and Your people are not the enemy. You hold the power for true forgiveness and I look to you to shine light unto us all.
Amen.
